It’s easy to come across many techno albums which contain neither a true vision nor a concept these days. However, throughout the last three years, the Berlin sound has witnessed a revival in both method and sound aesthetic. This is largely thanks to the work of a specific cohort of artists which have recalled on past principles and methods to push things forward in the aim of creating new and original frameworks for electronic dance music. At the centre of this limited group are the hardware radicalists known as the Analogue Cops and Steffi, the passionate heart behind Dolly and Klakson. Their unification in the studio has given us some of the best productions of the past year and this latest LP serves as both a proclamation of their shared love for the analogue sound and as a breath of fresh air for techno.

[HELLO020] OTHERS – Dope Me

OTHERS aka Bruno Pronsato and Daze Maxim – Dope Me

Label: Hello?Repeat
Catalog#: [HELLO020]
Format: 12″ Vinyl
Country: Germany
Released: 25 June 2012

Tracklist:
A. Dope Me

B.
 Does Caroline Know

Credits:
Dope Me / Does Caroline Know? is a slightly clubbier affair-less Sun Ra and more Soul Capsule-but still possesses the air of strangeness that makes the duo so unique. Each artist leaves his mark within the first few measure of Dope Me. The steady high-hats and flawless kick drum are straight out of Dazes playbook, while the nervous piano and 3 Chairs-style claps are unmistakably Bruno. As for the slurred vocal pleading >Dope me..dope me<, thats anyones guess. The track carries on for a solid nine minutes as half-melodies and quasi-hooks slide in and out of the mix. The B-side, Does Caroline Know?, takes us deeper and darker. The drums are plodding, the mood is ominous, and a series of dreamlike flourishes add to an already eerie groove. Like the A-side, its a surrealistic style of house that only these two could deliver. The artwork, as usual, is done by Daze Maxim.

The debut album of these two young lads with baseball hats not only honours and delves into a sound that already peaked some fifteen years ago, it also hones and elevates it, without ever falling into the Reynoldsmania trap (please see Retromania for further reference) or being old gold retold. And this is all oh-so-clear from the very start: the fine flutes of >When Its There< go straight to your heart and they do so without any self-mockery or hipster smiles as much as the gasping 303-sounds, chirping birds and healing DX-like bass sounds a few tracks later do. >Salty Days< – an allusion not to grim times, but to a certain members adoration for the crystalline mineral – is blessed with a coherence that isnt samey, with tradition that isnt leaden and a feeling that is pure.
